Dr. April Mustian is Co-Principal Investigator for the Illinois SPDG External Evaluation contract. She is an assistant professor of Special Education at Illinois State University. As a higher education faculty member, she provides in-depth instruction to pre-service teachers and graduate students in special education on RtI/MTSS, including how to deliver effective research-based instruction, the importance of fidelity, continuous progress monitoring, and making data-based decisions at the classroom and school-wide levels.
Dr. Mustian has also provided professional development to districts on RtI/MTSS implementation, with specific emphasis on the use of effective research-based interventions in reading at each tier. Further, she has co-authored book chapters and journal articles related to RtI/MTSS. Dr. Mustian’s research interests include academic and behavioral interventions for students with and at risk for mild to moderate disabilities (with specific emphasis on students with Emotional Disturbance), RtI/MTSS, disproportionality, and positive behavior support.
